MARSIS EXPERIMENT DESCRIPTION

MARSIS in one of the seven instruments of ESA Mars Express Mission

MARSIS in a multi-frequency Synthetic Radar Altimeter with around penetration capabilities

PRIMARY SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES

  • To map the distribution of water, both liquid and solid, in the upper portion of the crust of Mars

SECONDARY SCIENTIFIC OBJECTIVES

  • Mars subsurface geologic probing
  • Mars surface characterization: large scale altimetry
  • Mars ionosphere sounding: global measurement of the ionosphere electron density and investigation of the sun and the solar wind on the electron density
